Here at Carefree Boat Club Coastal Virginia, I am often asked where our members can go to see whales! Starting in December, the migration season brings humpback and fin whales to these waters, offering a rare opportunity to witness their breathtaking displays up close. Whales have been spotted in large numbers as early as December and as late as March, with the prime months for sightings being January through February. We heard through the grapevine that they were spotted over the weekend!
Here are some tips for winter whale watching:
* Remember that winter weather conditions along the coast are frequently windy, with slightly colder temperatures on the water.
* Wear warm clothing, including a waterproof jacket in case of rain, hats, gloves, and scarves.
* Bring a pair of sunglasses…the water can be VERY bright when it’s sunny!
*. If you get seasick, watch the waves as they approach the boat. You can take non-drowsy anti-nausea medication before you venture out, but ginger chew candies help too!
* The MOST important item to pack is your camera!
Enjoy, be safe, and HAVE FUN!
